The fundamental purpose of a Gyroscope is to maintain a firm direction while moving towards a given location when external forces are at work to throw one off course.  The Axis of the gyroscope always stays fixed on true North, or on the direction of the one setting the course, while the rings move at various speeds and different angles depending on forces exerted on them.

This is a powerful symbol of how followers of Christ ought to navigate through life!  The Apostle Paul understood the realities of intentional mission when he said in Ephesians 4:11, that apostles, prophets, evangelists and pastor-teachers were to prepare God’s people for the works of service.  Notice what he says in Ephesians 4:12-14, “… so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.  Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming.”
